Vatican office clarifies: teaching on condoms and AIDS will not change

.- An official from the Pontifical Council for Health and Pastoral Care, presided by Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragán, made it clear today that the recent interview given by the Mexican prelate to the Italian daily La Reppublica, doesn’t hint at any change in the doctrine of the Church on the use of condoms to fight Aids.

Over the weekend, numerous dailies and news agencies have headlined the Cardinal’s interview, in which he declared that: “This is a very difficult and delicate subject that requires prudence. My department is studying this closely with scientists and theologians expressly assigned to draft a document that will be issued soon,” he said.

The prelate’s declarations became the basis of heavy speculations, especially his thoughts on making “the Church’s position more flexible,” in respect to the use of condoms.

Nevertheless, Msgr. Antonio Soto Guerrero, personal secretary of Cardinal Lozano Barragán, and member of the Pontifical Council for Health, told CNA that “the Doctrine of the Church remains firmly within the principles of Catholic moral. Facing AIDS, there is abstinence; we cannot forget that the issue has to do in large parts to a moral disorder facing the seventh commandment.”

In his remarks to CNA, Msgr. Soto said that “indeed, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , headed by Cardinal William Joseph Levada, is currently studying the possibility of drafting a document on the same issue, and for that reason he has asked for the opinion of the other dicasteries in the Vatican. “

“Our dicasteries have already sent very serious studies from members and consulters who are answering to consultations requested by the Congregation (for the Doctrine of the Faith). The Congregation will then carry out a thorough study that will last a few months before presenting the conclusions to the Pope, who will subsequently decide of the publication of a document.”

“The moral principle of the Church is the same,” he stressed, “but the situations we have to face changed. It’s rather about applying the doctrine of the Church to always new situations such as AIDS,” said Msgr. Soto.

“Let me take a specific example”, he told CNA, in which one member of a couple “has AIDS, and requests matrimony, has the other partner the right to protect his health in any way?”

“The principle”, he said, “remains the defense of life and the conscience that everything that sends back to the fifth commandment includes the seventh one too, the act of fornicating that implies defending life.”

One response to “Vatican office clarifies: teaching on condoms and AIDS will not change

  1. Here are some of my thoughts on the evils of Catholicism

Stay away from our children. Multi-generational epidemics of sanctioned and church protected pedophilia proves religion and children should not mix

Stay out of our bedrooms. Work on correcting your own dysfunctional sexual urges

1 I always thought it a bit much that single adult non-partnered males (sexually frustrated/repressed priests) were used as marriage counselors . Priests had no direct knowledge of women and were nutured on a history of misogyny/anti-female teachings which still maintain that women are to have no control over their bodies especially their reproductive rights. Familiar women had been traditionally mothers or older woman (devoted housekeepers) -servants. Sex for married couples is to be experienced only to make children and created/creates a hell- of- a- lot of paying practitoners for the catholic church.

    2. 80,000 first nations people in Canada are charging catholic priests and brothers with physical/sexual and ritualized sexual abuse citing tragic instances of using children for the pleasure of visiting catholic officals in the residental schools. Most Catholic priests and top church officals refute these charges and cry anti-catholicism (sound familiar?) Organized religious deniers always attempt to demonize their accusers hoping to silence them.
Check out Gov’t Rulings posted today regarding Catholic abuse in residental schools. Also I posted an article of Church responsibilty in systematic exposure of healthy native children to Tuberculosis resulting in vast numbers of children from 24% in 14 residental schools to 69% deaths in one school and school grounds actually packed with unmarked graves. This has been called genocide.
The money spent by Church lawyers might have been better used in direct awards to the abused rather than the slithering even now underway by the church. The Gov’t is picking up most of the financial payments and shielding the catholic church from bankrupcy. Bankrupcy ..with all their money? Well it seems like the churches are set up lke little franchises and so the great wealth of the vatican remains for the splendor for the royalty of the vatican.
I believe that the catholic church’s crimes of genocide against the Indigenous peoples is unforgiveable but Unfortunately catholic priests like, http://fatherjoe.wordpress.com are fiercely in denial of genocide and refuse to acknowledge the overwhelming bulk of evidence. The Canadian Gov’t rulings DOCUMENT this horrid abuse yet Father Joe lyingly maintains that, “only a few rascals hurt children.” Tell this to the 80,000 Canadian Aboriginals not to mention thousands and thousands of direct family members dysfunctionally impacted.

3.Haven’t we witnessed enough sexual hypocrisy by religious leaders demonizing gays and then getting caught in affairs with gay prostitutes and speed.

4.Lets forbid the clergy from teaching children . It has been proven that Our children are not safe with non maried /non-partnered priests

    5. perhaps the cleargy who favour men should come out of the closet and embrace their sexual preferences. I have heard that the church has a new ruling that says it was ok to have been gay previously but you must now not have had any homesexual desires for at least a minimum of 3 years before becoming a priest. Unbelievable sham.

6.Doesn’t the catholic church have a responsibility for their lies about condom use causing aids? Perhaps millions of deaths might have been prevented if that lie hadn’t sabotaged ongoing efforts by health agencies to curtail the spread of aids thru condom education

7.A) The Catholic Church hierarchy – especially Eugenio Pacelli, before and after he became Pope Pius XII – aided the Nazis. Indeed, Pacelli and the Church played a central role in making Hitler the dictator of Germany.

    B) The Catholic Church was active in Nazi movements outside Germany, especially in the Baltic region and in the Balkans, where the Church helped run the Nazi puppet State of Croatia. After the war, the Vatican sheltered Croatian Nazi war criminals.

    C) Although at Yad Vashem, Pope John Paul II described the Nazis as having “a Godless ideology,” this is not how the Nazis presented themselves or how the Catholic Church described the Nazis when they were in power.

The German Catholic Church’s Centre Party (Zentrum) did clash with the Nazis in the 1920s, but as Hitler wrote (see quote below) their quarrel was over politics, not Catholic religious teachings, let alone belief in god. I can find no record from the period of Nazi rule of the Catholic Church attacking the Nazis as atheists, perhaps because they weren’t. The Nazis themselves claimed they were fighting against atheism, specifically Bolshevist atheism, which they charged was a Jewish-created movement. In attacking the Jews, the Nazis routinely employed Christian symbolism and traditional Christian antisemitic arguments, with which Europeans were familiar.

On 23 March 1933, the Nazi government put forward the Enabling act, which would allow Hitler to create new laws without parliamentary approval. This was after the Nazi-staged Reichstag fire; after the banning of the huge Communist party and subsequent arrest of thousands of communists and other anti-Nazis; and amidst a campaign of violent antisemitism. To become law, the Enabling act needed a 2/3 parliamentary vote. Before the vote, Hitler addressed the Reichstag (parliament) saying:

“While the Government is determined to carry through the political and moral purging of our public life, it is creating and insuring prerequisites for a truly religious life. The Government sees in both [Catholic and Protestant] Christian confessions the most important factors for the maintenance of our folkdom. It will respect agreements concluded between them and the States. However, it respects that its work will meet with a similar appreciation. The Government will treat all other denominations with equal objective justice. It can never condone, though, that belonging to a certain denomination or to a certain race might be regarded as a license to commit or tolerate crimes. The Government will devote its care to the sincere living together of Church and State.” (My emphasis – Jared Israel)

8.Muhammad’s Sword; Why DID Pope Benedict Utter These Words In Public? Why Now?
    April 30th, 2007 from globalresearch.ca

A popes religious robes to cover the nakedness of economic interests?

When the Catholics re-conquered Spain from the Muslims, they instituted a reign of religious terror. The Jews and the Muslims were presented with a cruel choice: to become Christians, to be massacred or to leave. And where did the hundreds of thousand of Jews, who refused to abandon their faith, escape? Almost all of them were received with open arms in the Muslim countries. The Sephardi (”Spanish”) Jews settled all over the Muslim world, from Morocco in the west to Iraq in the east, from Bulgaria (then part of the Ottoman Empire) in the north to Sudan in the south. Nowhere were they persecuted. They knew nothing like the tortures of the Inquisition, the flames of the auto-da-fe, the pogroms, the terrible mass-expulsions that took place in almost all Christian countries, up to the Holocaust.

WHY? Because Islam expressly prohibited any persecution of the “peoples of the book”. In Islamic society, a special place was reserved for Jews and Christians. They did not enjoy completely equal rights, but almost. They had to pay a special poll-tax, but were exempted from military service – a trade-off that was quite welcome to many Jews. It has been said that Muslim rulers frowned upon any attempt to convert Jews to Islam even by gentle persuasion – because it entailed the loss of taxes.

Every honest Jew who knows the history of his people cannot but feel a deep sense of gratitude to Islam, which has protected the Jews for fifty generations, while the Christian world persecuted the Jews and tried many times “by the sword” to get them to abandon their faith.

THE STORY about “spreading the faith by the sword” is an evil legend, one of the myths that grew up in Europe during the great wars against the Muslims – the reconquista of Spain by the Christians, the Crusades and the repulsion of the Turks, who almost conquered Vienna. I suspect that the German Pope, too, honestly believes in these fables. That means that the leader of the Catholic world, who is a Christian theologian in his own right, did not make the effort to study the history of other religions.

Why did he utter these words in public? And why now?

There is no escape from viewing them against the background of the new Crusade of Bush and his evangelist supporters, with his slogans of “Islamofascism” and the “Global War on Terrorism” – when “terrorism” has become a synonym for Muslims. For Bush’s handlers, this is a cynical attempt to justify the domination of the world’s oil resources. Not for the first time in history, a religious robe is spread to cover the nakedness of economic interests; not for the first time, a robbers’ expedition becomes a Crusade.

The speech of the Pope blends into this effort. Who can foretell the dire consequences
